FEMINISM! PATRIARCHY! MATRIARCHY! MISOGYNY! THE HUMAN RACE TO HAVE IT ALL!

I’m indifferent towards blogging, I prefer vlogging because I think by means of video, you can actually connect more to the person creating the content but here I am. This Covid break got me thinking about a lot of things, actually, it got a lot of people thinking about a lot of things and overthinking can be toxic without an appropriate outlet and so I decided to blog because, it is not every time that a person will feel like being in front of a camera.
You might think “What is Koko talking about?”, “This has nothing to do with the topic!” so I might as well just cut right to the chase. I recently posted a quote I thought up on my instagram and a friend asked me to expatiate. It goes like this “There is no FREEDOM anywhere. Do Not bE a sLavE of liberation”. At the moment of posting it, it made a lot of sense to me because no matter how free we think we are, we would always be slaves to our desires, goals and ambition. But during the course of explaining to my friend, I realised much more.

A lot of events has gone down in history, events that all adds up to who we are today and we have heroes and heroines like Gandhi, Martin Luther King JR, Nelson Mandela,  Nnamdi Azikwe, Katherine Johnson, Dorothy Vaughan and Mary Jackson (the beautiful ladies from hidden figures) and so much more to thank for this. They were freedom fighters and strong icons. But, after everything they did and gave for this so called freedom, do we have it? The discuss for today is: IS THERE TRULY FREEDOM OR IS IT SOMETHING WE TELL OURSELVES SO WE KEEP FIGHTING?

Well my opinion on this matter is that there isn’t freedom. While the truth of the matter might sound harsh, it is what we have to deal with. The best we can get and the best we should fight for is liberation. According to the dictionary, Freedom is the power or right to act, speak or think as one wants while Liberation is the action of setting someone free from oppression. Now the questions to ask one’s self is ‘Is freedom realistic?’

In today’s society for example, when a lady works in a law firm, it is fine, it is good. Why? Because we were liberated from patriarchy not FREED. When a lady is offered a white collar job and she turns it down to be a full time housewife, she will be attacked by so called feminist and reasons will be given to her as to why she decided to return to her oppressor and why she chooses to waste the efforts of the good people who fought long and hard for her freedom. They forget the true meaning of freedom, which is doing what you want when you want. She is then pushed into the labour market against her own will because of what people would say, this will then appear to be a choice. However it is a choice that has been tainted by the view of society. This is just to say that we are our own oppressors. Education is good, education is fine, education is the best legacy they say, but what if I do not want to go to school!

I get that the freedom the people from the past actually fought for was the right to do things if I wanted to but the current society turned it into a must! This isn’t right. I shouldn’t do something just because you believe it’s the best for me. Freedom is doing what I feel is best for me and that might include being a full time house wife or not getting an education. Freedom can be similar to values and morals in the sense that what I think is right might be what you believe is wrong.

In law, my right becomes an offense when it violates another person’s right. I have the right to speech but when I call someone a bitch on insta or I start to slut shame a girl, it becomes cyber bullying. What happened to my right to speech? This makes absolute sense if there is to be law and order. And it is just one more reason to prove that there isn’t absolute freedom. The theoretical idea of freedom is perfect but it isn’t practical because you cannot do what you want when you want! Periodttt!

Coming back to the analogy of being offered a job by a law firm, if you actually want the job because of your ambition, you’re a slave of your ambition, so long you have a reason to do something, you are a slave of your desires. We are all slaves of one thing or the other as long as it compels us to do something even when we don’t want to. And it is fine. There is no need for you to get worked up about it. Frankly speaking, we are all slaves and even when we seek liberation, we are compelled to do certain things we wouldn’t want to do for the sake of liberation and we call them sacrifices. I’m just going to conclude by saying that liberation is what you seek, not freedom because absolute freedom does not exist anywhere if there is to be peace. Do not get it twisted. The only freedom we have is getting to choose who’s or what’s slave we become. I should be free to choose if I want to be oppressed or not. So don’t you come for me when I make my decision, it is mine and mine alone to make and that is the only freedom I get.
